Camping near Lake Michigan, part one.

This weekend’s adventure took me to Lake Michigan. After realizing that I needed to head up there for work, a thought occurred to me. Why not kill two birds with one stone and turn what would otherwise be a mundane business trip into a family camping trip? After all, when I’m on the road I need what any other traveler needs: food and shelter. Most people look to a hotel for that when on the road. I was looking for something a little more unique…

So, we called around to a few different campsites and we finally settled on one. The Double JJ Resort, a "cowboy-themed" camping spot. It is about 20 miles from Lake Michigan, and close to my business appointments anyways. The campsite offered traditional hotel rooms, but also offered cottages and rustic camping. We elected for the rustic camping. Well, the campsite itself was rustic, but it offered amenities. There are clean and close restrooms and showers. The campsite also features a water park, a slew of stores and a few restaurants. It is a cowboy themed resort, so there are cowboy shows and line dancing at various places around the property, as well as horseback riding, campfire dinners and tons of other cowboy themed activities for kids. Enough typing though, here's what our trip looked like!

This is our "day one" smiles from the kids. We had a nice spot and the weather was just beautiful!

See the fire? Well, we cooked exclusively on an open fire using our cast iron pan. Heres a little taste of what we served up. As always, potatoes are a must for campfire cooking.

Our long-haired camp cook whipping up some eggs.

And for breakfast, of course we had to get some sausages with the eggs.

And breakfast is served!

We also took a trip to a local farm and got fresh picked corn and freshly dug potatoes. They were amazing!

And now its time for part two to see the things we did while we were in Michigan!
